The Center for Language Education and Cooperation funds the scholarship, and Southwestern University of Finance and Economics hosts recipients in Chengdu. The 2026 notice offers an eleven-month academic-year route and a five-month semester route.

Fields vary by route and include international Chinese language education, Chinese language and literature, Chinese history, Chinese philosophy, Chinese language study, Chinese medicine, and Tai Chi culture. The remaining deadline is October 26, 2026 for the semester route beginning in March 2027.

Benefits & funding

  • The scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, living allowance, and comprehensive medical insurance for the in-person study routes.
  • SWUFE values the five-month package at CNY 26,400: CNY 10,000 tuition, CNY 3,500 accommodation, CNY 12,500 living allowance, and CNY 400 insurance.
  • SWUFE values the eleven-month package at CNY 56,000: CNY 20,000 tuition, CNY 7,700 accommodation, CNY 27,500 living allowance, and CNY 800 insurance.
  • Recipients may use campus accommodation or, with approval, receive an accommodation subsidy under the published standard.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens, at least 16 years old on September 1, 2026, in good physical and mental health, of good conduct, and interested in Chinese-language education or related work.
  • The usual maximum age is 35 on September 1, 2026; in-service Chinese teachers may be up to 45.
  • For eleven-month study, TCSOL requires HSK Level 3 with 270 plus HSKK; literature, history, or philosophy requires HSK Level 4 with 180 plus HSKK Intermediate with 60; Chinese language study requires HSK Level 3 with 210, with HSKK preferred.
  • For five-month study, TCSOL, literature, history, or philosophy requires HSK Level 3 with 180 plus HSKK; Chinese medicine or Tai Chi culture requires an HSK result, with HSKK preferred.
  • The semester and academic-year routes normally exclude anyone who received the same type of scholarship during the previous three years.

Application process

    Prepare a passport scan, HSK and HSKK reports valid for two years, and a reference from the head of a recommending institution; add employment and employer-reference documents if applying as an in-service teacher, or guardian documents if under 18.

    Apply through the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship system, select Southwestern University of Finance and Economics as the host institution, and submit the required materials.

    Submit a second application through the SWUFE international-student portal; applicants needing SWUFE as their recommending institution must email their application number to international@swufe.edu.cn, and the application fee is CNY 600.
