The Camargo Fellowship is the Camargo Foundation’s flagship research residency for artists, scholars and thinkers. Selected individuals or teams live and work in Cassis, France, where the program connects research, experimentation and creation across disciplines.

The 2027–2028 public call covers residencies in fall 2027 or spring 2028. Camargo says this is the last public open call until further notice; a different selection process will begin in July 2027.

Benefits & funding

  • The residency lasts 10 weeks, with 14 fellowships divided between seven artists and seven scholars or thinkers.
  • Each fellow receives EUR 350 per week, EUR 3,500 in total, plus basic round-trip transportation to Cassis; advance-booked basic coach airfare is covered when flying.
  • Fellows receive a furnished campus apartment and access to shared work facilities, but art supplies, technical equipment and artwork shipping are not provided.

Eligibility

  • Applicants of any nationality may apply as artists, scholars or thinkers; individuals and teams of up to three are eligible.
  • Scholars must work in the arts or humanities with a focus on French or Francophone cultures, or cross-cultural study involving Mediterranean cultures and influences, and must hold a PhD with postdoctoral scholarship or be completing the final research or writing stage of a PhD.
  • Thinkers must be accomplished cultural or creative professionals engaged in critical thought, with work connecting theory, arts and society.
  • Artists must have at least five years of professional practice, be the primary creator of the proposed new work or project, and show a record such as publications, performances, exhibitions, credits, awards or grants.
  • Applicants must communicate well in English and be physically present in Cassis for the full residency; former fellows must wait three years before applying again.
