CBYX for Young Professionals sends 65 young Americans to Germany each year and hosts 65 young Germans in the United States. The American cohort is run by Cultural Vistas under a grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and Cultural Vistas has managed it for about four decades; the German cohort is funded by the German Bundestag and administered by Cultural Vistas Europe as the Parlamentarisches Patenschafts-Programm. This record covers the American cohort.
The year abroad runs in three parts: eight weeks of intensive German language training, one semester of coursework at a German university or university of applied sciences from October to January, and an internship in the fellow’s own career field from February to June. Fellows are placed across Germany and live with host families, in shared flats, or in student housing. The fellowship exists to keep the German-American relationship grounded in individual people, and alumni join the State Department’s international exchange alumni network.

- Health insurance covering illness and accident inside EU countries. Pre-existing conditions and treatment in the United States are excluded.
- Internship pay varies widely. Cultural Vistas states that compensation ranges from unpaid to generous salaries plus housing allowances, and the monthly stipend is topped up when internship earnings fall below the living threshold the program sets.
- Self-paid share: applicants should have roughly US$5,000 available, plus 400–500 EUR a month for personal spending across the program year. Travel to and from the orientation and the re-entry seminar in Washington, D.C. is also the fellow’s own cost.
Eligibility
- U.S. citizenship.
- Aged 18½ to 24 on 1 August of the program start year.
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- General coursework already completed in the target internship field at a community college, college, or university. A completed degree is not required.
- The application asks for a transcript covering at least the last four semesters of study.
- Clear career goals and relevant experience in that career field, from work or internships. No minimum number of years is published.
- No prior German is required; the two-month course starts from any level, including none.
- Not eligible: previous recipients of ECA-funded scholarships longer than eight weeks, including the CBYX high school fellowships.
- Not eligible: current or recent employees of the U.S. Department of State or USAID, paid or unpaid, and their immediate family members. The same bar covers employees of the organizations that deliver ECA youth exchange programs. It applies during the employment and for one year after it ends.
- ECA states that these programs are designed predominantly for people who have not lived abroad for six months or longer in the last five years. This is described as a design intent, not a disqualification.
- German citizens apply to the mirrored cohort through Cultural Vistas Europe’s Parlamentarisches Patenschafts-Programm, which runs a separate process.

Application process
- 1Complete the CBYX-YP eligibility and interest form on the Cultural Vistas site. It screens eligibility and is how an applicant requests the application for the 2027-28 program year.
- 2The application is open from 1 September to 1 November 2026. Every year the deadline is 1 November for the program year beginning the following July.
- 3Submit the online application form with a résumé, a transcript covering at least the last four semesters of study, proof of U.S. citizenship (passport or birth certificate), and a high school diploma or proof of graduation.
- 4Arrange one letter of recommendation, submitted directly by the recommender.
- 5Choose the U.S. state or territory to represent. The choice is not final at application stage.
- 6Selected fellows depart for Germany the following July. The 2025-26 cohort arrived in Germany on 26 July.
