ESA’s Research Fellowships in Space Science are postdoctoral appointments for independent research in heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics or fundamental physics. Fellows join the Directorate of Science at ESAC in Spain, ESTEC in the Netherlands or ESA’s office at STScI in the United States.

The initial appointment lasts two years and may be extended for a third. Fellows may devote up to 20% of their time to ESA science-support activities and have no teaching duties.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have obtained a PhD in a relevant technical or scientific discipline before the fellowship begins.
  • Applicants must be nationals of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland or the United Kingdom.
  • Candidates who received their PhD within the past five years are preferred; this is a preference, not a hard eligibility limit.
  • Good knowledge of English or French is required.
