The Franz Werfel Scholarship supports research and teaching related to Austrian literature. OeAD administers the programme for qualified university scholars from around the world.

Recipients conduct visiting research at university departments and pursue specialist work in Austrian libraries, archives, or research institutions. The programme also builds longer-term academic cooperation among scholars of Austrian literature.

Benefits & funding

  • A monthly grant of EUR 2,500 for a research stay lasting four to nine months.
  • An extension may bring the total funded period to as much as 18 months.
  • After completing at least 12 scholarship months, recipients may apply for follow-up support.
  • Follow-up measures include an invitation to the annual Franz Werfel Conference, a one-month research grant every three years, a habilitation grant, and a publication allowance.

Eligibility

  • Applicants may come from any country; no nationality or residence restriction is stated.
  • The programme is for highly qualified university scholars whose work focuses on Austrian literature.
  • OeAD identifies PhD students, postdoctoral scholars, and researchers as target groups.
  • Teaching experience and employment at a university are preferred, not stated as mandatory eligibility gates.
