GIST Scholarships — Master's Scholarship

GIST Scholarships support international students admitted to master’s and doctoral study at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology. Recipients pursue an in-person graduate degree in Gwangju, South Korea.

The package combines full tuition support with monthly allowances and other benefits, while some payments depend on academic progress. GIST runs separate spring and fall admission cycles.

Benefits & funding

Tuition support covers KRW 3,607,000 per semester.
New students are charged a one-time KRW 680,000 matriculation fee, although some may receive an exemption.
The monthly student allowance is KRW 140,000 for master’s students and KRW 295,000 for doctoral students, plus a meal allowance of nearly KRW 100,000 per month; both require at least 9 credits in the previous semester.
International students may receive an additional KRW 120,000 per month after maintaining a previous-semester GPA of at least 3.0 out of 4.5.
Research assistants participating in projects received an average of KRW 6,400,000 per year at master’s level and KRW 13,740,000 per year at doctoral level as of 2022.
GIST supports 60% of National Health Insurance, provides an annual medical checkup, and reimburses one one-way flight to Korea for incoming international students.
Campus housing is available subject to waiting times, but residents pay deposits, monthly fees, utilities and possible additional costs.

Eligibility

Applicants must apply to a GIST graduate program and hold, or expect to hold, the final degree required for their chosen program before enrollment.
The international admission rules exclude applicants who also hold Korean citizenship under dual nationality.
Applicants submit official degree certificates and transcripts for their undergraduate and any graduate study, with English or Korean translations where required.
Two recommendation letters must be uploaded electronically by the referees before the deadline.
Applicants normally submit a qualifying English test result: TOEFL iBT 80, TOEFL PBT 550, Academic IELTS 6.5, TOEIC 750 or New TEPS 285. Published exemptions and conditional-admission routes apply in specified circumstances.
Scholarship allowances after the first semester remain subject to the stated credit and GPA conditions.

Application process

Choose a graduate field, complete the online application and pay the application fee during an active admission period.

Upload the required academic records, passport copy and English-language evidence, and register two referees for electronic recommendations.

Monitor email for requests from the admission team or department and attend an interview if requested.

After receiving a result, accept the offer by the stated deadline, submit enrollment documents and pay the matriculation fee unless granted a waiver.

Send apostilled or Korean-embassy-authenticated academic certificates within 10 days after enrollment, then complete the student-visa process.
