The participating Max Planck Institutes offer academic computer science research internships throughout the year. Interns work in person with a faculty mentor at the Institute for Informatics, Software Systems, or Security and Privacy in Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern, or Bochum.
Projects are matched to each intern’s interests, preparation, and prior experience. The program admits qualified students worldwide and industry researchers seeking academic research experience.
Benefits & funding
- Every intern receives a monthly stipend intended to cover living costs.
- The program covers housing and round-trip travel from the intern’s habitual residence to the host institute.
- Summer internships most commonly last 12 to 14 weeks; dates and duration are agreed with the mentor, and longer placements are possible.
- Selected interns who need a German or Schengen visa receive supporting documents, while applicants remain responsible for applying on time.
Eligibility
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral students worldwide may apply, as may industry employees seeking academic computer science research experience. Recent Bachelor’s or Master’s graduates may also apply if they meet the academic requirements.
- Applicants need a strong computer science background equivalent to roughly the first three years of a standard Bachelor’s program by the internship start, or relevant prior research experience.
- An excellent academic record, interest in academic computer science research, and professional English fluency are required. German is not required.
- Interdisciplinary applicants are eligible when computer science remains the primary focus. Prior research experience is considered but is not mandatory.
