Jentel Artist Residency is an in-person professional-development residency in Banner, Wyoming, for visual artists, writers, and composers. Residents undertake self-directed creative work in a rural setting southeast of Sheridan.

Each residency lasts about three weeks, with arrivals on the 15th and departures on the morning of the 7th of the following month. The current application is for Winter/Spring 2027 residencies scheduled within the January 15 to May 7 program window.

Benefits & funding

  • Each resident receives $100 at the end of each of the three residency weeks, for a total stipend of $300.
  • Jentel provides a private bedroom, shared living and kitchen areas, and a separate studio or workspace.
  • There is no attendance fee beyond the $30 non-refundable application fee. Selected residents must pay a $100 reservation deposit; it becomes non-refundable if they cancel less than two months before their start date.
  • Residents cover travel and shipping, food and beverages, creative materials, equipment, and other personal expenses.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be visual artists working in any medium, writers in fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry, or composers working across musical genres.
  • Applicants must be at least 25 years old.
  • Applicants must either be US citizens, regardless of where they live, or have their primary residence in the United States during the residency year.
  • Full-time students enrolled for 9 or more academic hours at the time of the requested residency are ineligible; postdoctoral fellows may apply. No degree credential is required.
  • Previous Jentel residents may reapply after five years. Collaborators must each submit a separate application and a joint proposal.

Application process

    Choose the relevant Submittable route for writing, visual art, or composition; eligible Wyoming residents and University of Wyoming creatives may use their dedicated routes.

    Prepare the requested resume, recent work samples, contact details for three character statements, and a self-directed proposal compatible with Jentel’s studios and facilities.

    Complete the online Submittable application and pay the non-refundable $30 fee by September 15, 2026, at 12:00 noon Mountain Time.

    Monitor the Submittable profile for correspondence; Winter/Spring decisions are due by November 15, 2026.
