The Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Programme is run by ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore and honours Professor Wang Gungwu, the Institute’s former Board Chairman of 17 years. It aims to build the next generation of scholars and policy makers working on the nexus of big-power relations and its impact on Southeast Asia, through policy-relevant research on international politics and security, regional economics, and digital technology. Fellows are in residence at ISEAS for between two and six months, conduct their own research project, and join a network of regional scholars.

  • Fixed monthly stipend for the duration of the fellowship, inclusive of a housing subsidy
  • Round-trip economy-class airfare between the fellow’s home country and Singapore
  • Access to office space, computer equipment and IT services, the ISEAS Library, and other Institute facilities
  • A meeting with Professor Wang Gungwu during the fellowship, where possible
  • Publication opportunities in ISEAS Perspective and ISEAS Fulcrum, plus an in-house research seminar

Eligibility

  • Intended for post-doctoral researchers and mid-career policy makers
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent is the expected profile, but mid-career policy makers without a Ph.D. are welcome if their CV shows an appropriate level of professional experience and research interest
  • Research must fit the priority areas: US–China relations and Southeast Asia; Asia-Pacific security (e.g. South China Sea, China–ASEAN); global/regional economic cooperation (e.g. Belt and Road Initiative, RCEP); the rise of China and its impact on Southeast Asian communities; the use of digital media and technology to influence perceptions in Southeast Asia
  • No nationality, residency, or age restrictions are stated
  • Fellows must be in residence at ISEAS in Singapore for the full fellowship period

Application process

    Arrange for two referees to email their Letters of Recommendation to development@iseas.edu.sg, using the subject line specified by ISEAS for the 2027 programme.
