The Marshall Scholarship funds US citizens for graduate study at any university in the United Kingdom. The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission runs the programme to develop scholars, leaders and contributors to stronger UK–US understanding.

The 2027 routes cover a one-year master’s degree, two years of master’s study, or doctoral pathways lasting up to three years. Applicants may choose any field of study, subject to the scholarship rules and admission by the selected UK university.

Benefits & funding

  • The award covers university fees, living costs and fares to and from the United States.
  • It also provides an annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, plus a possible contribution for a dependent spouse.
  • The one-year award lasts 12 months; the two-year award lasts 22 months, while eligible doctoral pathways may receive up to three years of funding subject to academic progress and pathway conditions.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be United States citizens when applying.
  • By September 2027, applicants must hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States and must have graduated after April 2024.
  • The undergraduate GPA must be at least 3.7 on a 4.0 scale; rounded GPAs are not accepted.
  • Applicants must not have studied for or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British university, nor have taken GCSEs or A Levels at school in the UK.
  • There is no age restriction and no stated work-experience requirement.

Application process

    Contact the Marshall Scholarship adviser at your undergraduate institution and review the eligibility rules and study pathways.
  2. 2
    Choose either the one-year or two-year scholarship, one eligible US region, and the UK university and course choices for the proposed study plan.
  3. 3
    Complete the online form, request three recommendation letters and submit the application to the undergraduate institution for endorsement by 29 September 2026.

    The institution decides whether to endorse the application, adds its endorsement letter and submits the complete application by 1 October 2026.
  5. 5
    Shortlisted applicants are invited to regional interviews in mid-November, with final decisions announced shortly afterward.
