The International Thesis Scholarship supports Sapienza University of Rome students who need to carry out part of their thesis research at a suitable institution, organisation, company or international body abroad. Applicants remain enrolled at Sapienza and work with a Sapienza thesis supervisor and a tutor at the overseas host.

Each faculty runs its own call under the university regulation, so award numbers, application methods and deadlines vary by faculty. For 2025/26, Sapienza allocated 160 scholarships across its faculties.

Benefits & funding

  • Each scholarship has a total gross value of €2,821 including IRAP; the gross amount allocated to the student is €2,600.
  • The faculty pays 75% after receiving the departure declaration and the remaining 25% after evidence of at least two months abroad and confirmation from the overseas tutor.
  • The research period must last at least two consecutive months in a country other than the student’s country of origin.

Eligibility

  • Be enrolled at Sapienza from the first year of a master’s programme, or in the penultimate or final year of a single-cycle master’s programme, and no later than the first year beyond the standard programme length.
  • Be current on university and regional tuition payments and meet the merit and income requirements in the relevant faculty call.
  • Have a thesis topic assigned by a Sapienza supervisor and sufficient command of the destination country’s language as assessed by that supervisor.
  • Obtain a supervisor statement, validated by the relevant teaching office, covering the need for research abroad, dates and work plan, the host’s suitability, and the overseas tutor’s details.
  • No nationality or gender restriction is stated; the overseas research must take place outside the student’s country of origin.

Application process

    Agree on the thesis project, overseas host and research period with a Sapienza supervisor, and identify a tutor at the host institution.

    Obtain the validated supervisor statement describing the rationale, dates, work plan, host and overseas tutor.
  3. 3
    Follow the call issued by your Sapienza faculty and submit its application form and required documents by that faculty’s deadline.

    If selected, accept the scholarship within 15 days after the final ranking is published and provide the departure declaration for the first payment.

    After returning, submit the supervisor’s completion statement and the overseas tutor’s attendance and activity confirmation; graduate within six months of return.
