Chevening Scholarships

Benefits & funding

• Payment of tuition fees.
• Economy travel to and from the recipient’s country of residence by an approved route.
• Arrival and departure allowances, the cost of one entry-clearance visa application, a travel top-up allowance, and up to £75 toward required TB testing.
• A monthly living stipend for accommodation and living costs; the rate depends on whether study is inside or outside London and is reviewed annually.
• A structured engagement programme with scholars, alumni, the FCDO, speakers, and partner organisations.

Eligibility

• Applicants must be citizens of a country or territory listed in Chevening’s official award directory and apply through the relevant citizenship route. The structured nationality field enumerates every currently listed scholarship route.
• Applicants for an award from an ODA-eligible country must reside in an ODA-eligible country. Applicants resident in the UK are ineligible, except residents of British Overseas Territories.
• Applicants need at least 2,800 hours of work experience acquired after completing an undergraduate degree, roughly two years of full-time work. For this cycle, a degree completed after October 2024 does not allow enough time to meet the requirement.
• Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies them for a UK master’s programme and must apply to three different eligible UK university courses.
• Recipients must commit to returning to their country of award for at least two years after the scholarship ends.
• British or dual British citizens are ineligible, except citizens of a British Overseas Territory or BN(O) holders applying from Hong Kong. The official eligibility page also excludes specified recent employees and relatives, people holding refugee status in an ineligible country, and people who previously studied in the UK with UK Government scholarship funding, subject to the stated Chevening Fellowship exception.

Application process

   Select the applicant’s country or territory of citizenship in the official Chevening award directory and open the relevant scholarship page.

   Follow the application link to the online system, complete the eligibility check, and retain the access code.

   Complete the requested personal, immigration, education, work, course-choice, referee, and essay sections.

   Submit the application by 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Shortlisted applicants later provide supporting documents and attend an interview.

   A successful interviewee must submit at least one unconditional offer from an eligible UK university by 8 July 2027 at 17:00 BST.
