Benefits & funding

• The ten-month award totals DKK 125,000, paid as DKK 12,500 monthly installments for housing, meals, incidentals, and travel.
• Benefits include international travel support within the stipend, accident and sickness coverage, additional health insurance, and a 24/7 mental-health support line.
• Recipients receive a late-August arrival orientation in Copenhagen, a mid-year seminar, program coordination, and enrichment activities.
• Non-degree students receive a special tuition waiver, but degree-seeking students must pay tuition for every year, including their Fulbright year; affiliation fees and tuition are not grant benefits.

Eligibility

• Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals by the application deadline; permanent residents are not eligible.
• Dual U.S.–Danish citizens are ineligible. Dual U.S.–other-country citizens may be considered, but must enter Denmark on a U.S. passport; Fulbright Denmark also requires these applicants to have permanent U.S. residence.
• Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent before the grant begins; currently enrolled bachelor’s students may apply if the degree will be conferred by then, while anyone holding or expecting a PhD by the national deadline is ineligible.
• The proposed activity must be at graduate level. Graduating seniors and recent graduates must enroll in Master’s-level classes; PhD applicants undertake independent research and academic activities rather than a full Danish PhD.
• Applicants may not have resided in Denmark during the year before the grant, with three months counted as residency, and anyone resident abroad for five or more of the preceding six years is ineligible.
• A signed affiliation letter from an eligible Danish university is required at the deadline, and applicants must separately apply for university admission and maintain a full-time workload.
• Danish is not required unless the host institution or proposed project requires it.
• General program exclusions also cover specified recent roles with U.S. exchange-program agencies and their listed immediate family, overseas medical-degree enrollment, clinical training or patient-care activity, multiple Fulbright U.S. Student applications, and applying to both the Student and Scholar programs in one cycle.

Application process

   Review the Denmark award description, confirm eligibility, and decide whether to apply through a U.S. institution or at large; institutional applicants must follow their earlier campus deadline.

   Secure the required signed affiliation letter from a Danish university and apply separately through that institution’s admission process.

   Complete the online application with the project title and abstract, a Statement of Grant Purpose of no more than 6,000 characters, three short answers, transcripts, the affiliation letter, three confidential recommendations, and any project-required language form.

   Submit the complete application and all recommendations by October 6, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

1. The 2027–2028 competition is open.
