The Global exchange grants support professional artists and curators in all disciplines who live and work in Berlin. The Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion funds artistic or curatorial collaboration with one or more partners at a location selected by the applicant.

The 2027 cycle supports projects lasting one to three months, with at least half of the grant period spent at the destination. Individual artists and artist groups may apply.

Benefits & funding

  • Grants range from €1,000 to €10,000 and are awarded in €500 increments.
  • The published guideline is €2,500 per month for travel within Europe and €3,000 per month for travel outside Europe.
  • The supported collaboration may last one, two, or three months.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be professionally active artists or curators with demonstrated artistic or curatorial qualifications.
  • Applicants must live and work in Berlin and have their primary residence registered there.
  • Applicants need an invitation letter from at least one cooperation partner for a collaboration with shared goals and mutual impact.
  • Applicants must not be enrolled at a university or college, including for a doctorate, or employed there as a professor.
  • No nationality list is specified; applicants from outside the EU must have official permission for self-employed activity in their passport or residence permit.
  • Artist groups must provide either a jointly signed declaration of association or an existing civil-law partnership agreement.
  • Pure research trips, residencies without local artistic collaboration, and presentations of existing work abroad are not eligible.

Application process

    Prepare the online application and short project description in German.

    Upload a project description of no more than five pages, invitation letter or letters, and an artistic CV or portfolio of no more than ten pages.

    Upload proof of the Berlin address and, where applicable, a valid residence permit; groups must also upload their signed association declaration or partnership agreement.

    Submit the complete application online by September 15, 2026, at 2:00 PM CET; late or incomplete submissions are not accepted for jury review.
