Official Page

The Graduate Research School Scholarships (UQGRSS) are the University of Queensland’s main funding route into a higher degree by research. They support a Doctor of Philosophy, a Master of Philosophy, or a research-focused professional doctorate in any study area at UQ, and they carry Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) funding. Domestic and international candidates compete in the same scheme, through scholarship rounds tied to UQ’s four research quarters.

Recipients relocate to UQ in Brisbane and work full-time on a research project with a UQ supervisory team. The number of awards varies from round to round.

Benefits & funding

  • Living stipend of AUD 39,220 per year, tax free (2026 rate), indexed annually.
  • Tuition fees for the research degree are covered; the tuition offset meets the full research-quarter tuition fee, but not the Student Services and Amenities Fee or other student fees.
  • Single Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for eligible international recipients.
  • Funded for 3.5 years, with one extension possible under UQ and RTP scholarship policy.
  • Domestic applicants may ask to be considered for a tuition fee scholarship as well as, or instead of, the living stipend.

Eligibility

  • Open to applicants of all nationalities; domestic and international candidates apply in separate rounds.
  • You must be applying for, or already enrolled in, a PhD, MPhil, or research-focused professional doctorate at UQ, in any field.
  • You must be nominated by the enrolling UQ school or institute and assessed by the Graduate Research School as meeting every condition for admission to the research program.
  • PhD admission normally requires a research master’s degree, a bachelor’s degree with at least honours class IIA, or a coursework master’s with a GPA of 5.65 on UQ’s 7-point scale plus research experience; other postgraduate qualifications need at least 5.0 with demonstrated research experience.
  • English: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each sub-band (7.0 overall for clinical projects), or paper-based TOEFL 570 with 5.0 in written English and 54 in reading and listening.
  • No age limit, work-experience minimum, or gender restriction is set.

Application process

  1. 1
Check you meet UQ’s admission requirements for a PhD, MPhil, or research-focused professional doctorate.
  2. 2

  3. 3
Prepare an academic CV, academic transcripts and degree certificates, English test results, and details for at least two referees.
  4. 4
Submit an expression of interest (EOI) at apply.uq.edu.au and complete the scholarship and sponsorship section — there is no separate scholarship form.
