KAAD In-country and Third-country Scholarships

Benefits & funding

• A KAAD scholarship for a Master’s degree taken at a university in the scholar’s own country or at a designated third-country university.
• An accompanying educational programme run through the existing KAAD alumni associations: thematic meetings, social activities and an annual seminar.
• Membership of KAAD’s international alumni network; in Africa, sur-place alumni are a main recruiting pool for KAAD’s Germany scholarships, which there are almost entirely doctoral.
• KAAD does not publish the monthly rate, the fee coverage or the award length for this stream. The responsible partner committee confirms these before an award.

Eligibility

• Come from and currently reside in a developing or emerging country in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Latin America where KAAD has a partner committee. Applications from other countries are considered only in exceptional cases.
• In-country route: applicants in Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Peru and Zimbabwe, at the locations KAAD names — in Africa these are Kumasi, Addis Ababa, Nairobi and Harare. KAAD’s Middle East department also names the Palestinian Territories.
• Third-country route: students from Myanmar for a Master’s at Assumption University of Thailand in Bangkok, or for the Master of Public Health International Program at the Faculty of Public Health, Mahidol University, supported by the Bettina Kattermann Foundation.
• Third-country route for refugees: people who fled Iraq or Syria may study for a Master’s in their host country, Jordan or Lebanon.
• Hold a university degree already and have professional experience in the home country.
• Be of Catholic denomination, or generally belong to a Christian denomination (this applies especially to applicants from the Near and Middle East). Others may qualify when Catholic partners propose them and they can show a commitment to inter-religious dialogue.
• Show above-average performance potential, and a study plan oriented toward permanent reintegration into the home region.
• Show religious and social commitment, or a willingness to engage in inter-religious dialogue.
• This stream funds Master’s study only. Doctorates, post-docs and research stays run through the Germany route of Scholarship Programme 1.

Application process

   Complete KAAD’s online scholarship questionnaire, covering academic record, degrees and grades, language levels, employer, faith background, social engagement and the intended study project. This is step one of a two-step process.

   KAAD refers the questionnaire to the partner committee responsible for the applicant’s country or region, which pre-selects candidates on its own schedule.
3. 3
   Candidates who pass pre-selection complete the full application with that committee.
4. 4
   Selected scholars take up a place at one of the named in-country or third-country universities and join the local KAAD alumni programme.
