The Talleres Extraprogramáticos de inglés are extracurricular English workshops run by the Programa Inglés Abre Puertas of Chile’s Ministry of Education. They give students in grades 5–8 of the public school system extra hours of spoken English through games and interactive activities tied to the national English curriculum.
Each workshop runs for six weekly one-hour sessions, normally over Zoom, and is led by an English teacher, an international English-speaking volunteer working from abroad, or a student teacher of English. A staff member from the school sits in on every session alongside the students.
Schools apply, not individual families. The initiative began in 2019 with grades 5–6, added grades 7–8 in 2021, and reports more than 35,000 public-school students served since then.
Benefits & funding
- Six one-hour English sessions over six consecutive weeks, at no cost to the school or to families.
- Activity plans aligned to Chile’s national English curriculum, on separate tracks for grades 5–6 and grades 7–8.
- Sessions led by English teachers, international English-speaking volunteers based abroad, or students of English pedagogy.
- Online delivery by default; a school may request an in-person workshop inside the application form, granted according to regional capacity and criteria.
- No stipend, scholarship, or travel money is attached; the workshop itself is the benefit.
Eligibility
- The applicant is the school. Individual students and parents cannot register directly.
- The school must belong to Chile’s public education system: Municipal, Particular Subvencionado, Servicio Local de Educación Pública, or Administración Delegada.
- At least one group of 15–20 students in grades 5–6, and/or one group of 15–20 students in grades 7–8.
- One fixed weekly day and time for each workshop across the whole implementation period.
- A computer room or alternative space with stable internet and one computer plus a headset per student; students may instead connect from home where the connection allows.
- One staff member willing to act as Contraparte del Establecimiento, the school counterpart and main contact for the program, ideally an English teacher.
- The school commits to weekly attendance of at least 80% of enrolled students, to accompanying all six sessions, to an initial briefing meeting, and to a satisfaction survey in the final week.
- No nationality requirement is stated; the gate is enrolment in a qualifying Chilean public school.

Application process
- 1Decide, before opening the form, how many workshops you want, the weekly day and time for each, and who will be the school counterpart.
- 2A school official completes the 2026 application form linked on the program page, ideally the director, an English teacher, or the head of the technical-pedagogical unit (Jefe/a UTP).
- 3Download, complete, and email the school commitment letter, signed by the director and the counterpart, to your Regional English Coordinator.
- 4Send one student list per requested workshop to the same coordinator, each file renamed in the format Nombre Establecimiento (5-6 o 7-8).
- 5Collect the parental authorization form for every participating student and send them all in a single email to the Regional English Coordinator by 11 September 2026.
- 6Attend the initial online briefing, then run the six sessions between 28 September and 20 November 2026.
