Teach For India places Fellows as full-time teachers for two years in low-income classrooms across nine cities: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune. The organisation is registered as Teach To Lead, was founded in 2008, and is the Indian member of the Teach For All network, which spans 64 countries. A Fellow takes a class of roughly 40 to 80 students somewhere between grades 1 and 10, working as a class teacher or as a subject teacher in English, Mathematics, Social Studies or Science.

Teaching experience is not expected of applicants: the Fellowship opens with a residential training institute, and a Program Manager coaches each Fellow through the two years alongside peer reflection groups. Around 1,000 Fellows are teaching at any one time, and more than 5,800 people have completed the Fellowship over the past 15 years. Teach For India frames the two years as the start of a longer path, and points to alumni who move into graduate study, companies, government work and organisations of their own.

Benefits & funding

  • Monthly salary of INR 30,000, which Teach For India states is subject to increase in line with cost of living.
  • City allowance of INR 6,000 to INR 12,600 a month, set by the placement city and by whether the Fellow relocates for the placement.
  • Health insurance cover of up to INR 100,000, plus access to free counselling.
  • Monthly reimbursements for classroom expenses.
  • Casual and sick leave, national, regional and school holidays, and a summer break.
  • A residential training institute before the classroom placement, then ongoing coaching from a Program Manager and structured peer reflection.
  • An optional summer internship between the two years, a Be The Change project in year two, and a career fair before the Fellowship ends.

Eligibility

  • Indian citizens, and holders of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status.
  • Graduation completed by June or July 2027 for the 2027 cohort, so students in their final year may apply.
  • A first application for the 2027 cohort, submitted within the selection cycle that runs from July 2026 to March 2027. One application is allowed per cycle.
  • English proficiency, assessed by an online English Assessment inside the application. Instruction is in English medium and a regional language is not a prerequisite.
  • No teaching experience and no education background are required. Training is provided.
  • No age limit is published. Current Fellows range in age from 22 to 64.
  • Availability for a two-year full-time commitment. Fellows may not hold any other professional or academic engagement during the Fellowship.

    Complete Stage I: the online application form covering academic and professional history, interests and motivations, together with the online English Assessment.

    Clear Stage I and receive an invitation to Stage II.

    Attend the Assessment Centre, which runs a sample teaching exercise, a group activity, a personal interview and a critical thinking assessment.

    Receive the selection decision, then join the residential training institute before the two-year classroom placement begins.
