The University of Alberta runs one entrance scholarship stream for international students starting an undergraduate degree at its campuses in Alberta, Canada. It has two routes. Admission-based awards need no scholarship application: eligibility is assessed from the high school admission average at the time of the admission offer, and the university contacts recipients directly.

Application-based awards share a single scholarship application in the U of A Awards Hub, which can only be submitted after applying for admission. The university says one in five first-year students receives a scholarship, out of $53 million awarded each year in undergraduate scholarships, awards and financial support. Values run from CAN $5,000 paid once to CAN $120,000 paid over four years, and one award covers full tuition, fees and living costs.

  • Gold Standard Scholarship: up to CAN $6,000, for the top 5% of students in each faculty.
  • President’s International Distinction Scholarship: up to CAN $120,000 over four years, awarded to 25 students each year.
  • Chan Pang Kuen Memorial International Distinction Scholarship: up to CAN $120,000 over four years.
  • May Quon Undergraduate Scholarship: up to CAN $100,000 over four years.
  • Cora Martinson International Scholarship: up to CAN $56,000 over four years, at Augustana Faculty in Camrose.
  • International Leader Scholarship: up to CAN $15,000.
  • Global Citizen Scholarship for IB Diploma students from an Aga Khan Academy: total tuition and non-instructional fees for four years, plus up to $28,000 a year for living expenses (the page prints this figure without a currency label; every other amount on it is in Canadian dollars).
  • The university lists these as examples and matches the same application against further awards.

Eligibility

  • Open to international undergraduate applicants. The stream sets no nationality bar; individual awards add their own conditions.
  • Most listed awards require entry into the first year of an undergraduate degree while studying in Canada on a student visa permit.
  • Admission-based awards are assessed from the high school admission average held at the time of the admission offer.
  • Application-based awards require an undergraduate admission application first; the scholarship application cannot be submitted before that.
  • The entrance award stream is for students coming directly from high school who have not completed post-secondary coursework. Current and transfer students use a separate undergraduate awards process.
  • The Cora Martinson International Scholarship is the exception on year of study: it covers any year of an undergraduate degree at Augustana Faculty.
  • Award-specific conditions: the May Quon Undergraduate Scholarship is for Chinese or Hong Kong citizens; the Global Citizen Scholarship is for students entering from Aga Khan Academies operating under the AKA agency of the Aga Khan Development Network, with strong International Baccalaureate Diploma standing.
  • Financial need forms part of the assessment for several awards — self-declared need for May Quon, indicated need for the Global Citizen award, and preference for indicated need on Cora Martinson.

Application process

    Apply for admission to a University of Alberta undergraduate degree program. Applications open October 1, and a nonrefundable fee must be paid before an application is processed.

    Take no further step for admission-based awards: the admission average is assessed automatically and the university contacts eligible students.

    Sign in to the Awards Hub at alberta.academicworks.ca with a University of Alberta CCID and password.

    Complete both the General Application and the Entrance Scholarship Application.

    Submit before the January 10 deadline. Applications cannot be updated or reopened afterwards, and incomplete submissions are not considered.

    Watch for scholarship offers, which are released starting in early winter.
